Gubernatorial Candidate Nan Whaley Visits River Valley Organizing
The Roundtable Discussion Focused on Need for Harm Reduction
(Portsmouth, OH) - River Valley Organizing hosted Gubernatorial Candidate Nan Whaley at its Portsmouth office on Tuesday, September 28, 2021. A group of over ten River Valley Organizing team members and community members met with Whaley to discuss the need for increased harm reduction efforts.
“No matter what someone is going through, we all deserve access to care and healthy lives,” said River Valley Organizing Junior Organizer Justin Hanley. He added, “Our elected officials in the State of Ohio can help ensure all Ohioans have that opportunity by supporting harm reduction efforts.”
River Valley Organizing Board Member Abby Spears shared with Whaley how the organization’s harm reduction efforts have positively impacted their communities, and how support from the state could amplify the work.
“Changes such as encouraging syringe exchange programs, decriminalizing drug paraphernalia, and prioritizing treatment over incarceration would help our loved ones to receive the care they need and reduce stigma around substance use disorders,” said Spears.
Whaley expressed her support for harm reduction work. She noted how similar work has been done in the city of Dayton, where she has served as mayor for the city since 2013.
“I’m proud that in Dayton, we’ve begun treating the opioid epidemic as the public health crisis it is. It’s time for all of Ohio to do the same,” said Whaley.
