River Valley Organizing Welcomes Back Congress

Nonprofit Participated in Several Days of Action in DC

(East Liverpool, OH) - River Valley Organizing and its affiliates traveled to Washington D.C. the week of September 20, 2021 to welcome Congress back from its summer recess. The nonprofit organization participated in several actions surrounding harm reduction, drug price negotiation, and environmental justice.

“All Americans deserve a government that works to ensure we can survive and thrive,” said Thomas Powell, an organizer with River Valley Organizing. “It was really encouraging to join thousands of people who believe in that same value as we welcomed our elected officials back into session.”

The harm reduction actions River Valley Organizing participated in included a text bank surrounding the MAT Act that was facilitated by People’s Action. Over 47,000 texts were sent to Energy and Commerce Chairman Congressman Pallone’s district. Additionally, the River Valley Organizing team visited with Representative Wenstrup’s Senior Health Policy Advisor to share their stories and discuss how better harm reduction and medical assisted treatment policies such as the MAT Act could do for our communities.

“Our elected officials need to be prioritizing the removal of cumbersome barriers in the healthcare system that prevent people from seeking treatment for opioid use disorder,” said River Valley Organizing Junior Organizer Justin Hanley, “The MAT Act will do just that and help prevent overdose deaths.”

The River Valley Organizing team also rallied with others outside of the headquarters for PhRMA, a lobby firm pushing against drug-pricing reforms. Senator Bernie Sanders joined them for the action.

“Our team was able to help bring attention to Big Pharma and its role in creating and perpetuating the opioid epidemic, ” said Powell.

The final action River Valley Organizing participated in was the Welcome Back Congress march to the U.S. Capitol. The action was a community-led effort and thousands of people from across the country joined. Participants traveled from WA, CA, OR, NV, AZ, CO, MN, KS, AL, GA, AR, IL, WI, MI, WV, AL, TN, TX, FL, NC, VA, DE, MD, PA, NY, NJ, MA, NH, ME, UT, HI, and DC.
